BPF raises funds for Pakistan floods

The team at the British Pakistan Foundation (BPF) has raised over a million rupees in a week’s time (August 1 – August 7) at its London office for the victims of floods in Pakistan in 2015. The funds have been utilised to assemble 300 ration bags – containing flour, sugar, rice, lentils, tea, powder milk and rusk. These will be distributed with help of RVMG Rangoonwala Trust in Karachi and the Pakistani army in submerged parts of the districts of Sukkur and Ghotki.

Our small London team, comprising four people, went around the office building and the neighbourhood during lunch hours to collect donations.

Sana Shah, manager at the BPF, was disturbed by the visuals of the floods on TV. “We get Pakistani news channels in Ilford, and seeing the devastation caused by these floods is very upsetting. We have only managed to collect and contribute a very small amount to the victims so far, but I hope that this initiative will serve as an eye opener to many in our community who would like to contribute.”

About 500 villages in four districts of Sindh have been submerged with nine people reported killed in flood-related incidents. According to the latest National Disaster Management Authority figures, about 800,000 people have been affected in 2,200 villages. As many as 151 people are reported dead in flood-related incidents across Pakistan, with more than half dead in Chitral and Khyber Pakthunkhwa.
