Please join us for the BPF Focus on Government and Politics Panel Discussion and Networking Event on the 20th of February 2018 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Attlee Room, Portcullis House, 1 Parliament Street, London SW1A 2JR.
The aim of this event is assist, guide and inspire those who wish to pursue a successful career within this field, as well as, to provide a networking opportunity for professionals and others from a wide range of industry sectors.
Our inspirational panellists include:
Baroness Sheehan (Liberal Democrats): Shas Sheehan is a long standing Liberal Democrat campaigner and former Cabinet Member on Richmond Borough Council. Shas went to school at Rosa Bassett School in South London before studying Chemistry at University College London. Following graduation, she became a chemistry teacher, and then a nursing auxiliary at New Cross Hospital. She went on to gain a Master’s Degree in Environmental Technology at Imperial College. In her political life, Shas worked as the Head of Office for fellow Lib Dem Peer Susan Kramer during her period as MP for Richmond Park. She went on to be elected as a Councillor for Kew on Richmond Borough Council, and served as a Cabinet Member for Climate Change, utilising her expertise in environmental technology to work towards a greener Richmond. pend per head on mental services of any borough in London), and for 20mph speed limits in Merton. Rehman Chishti MP (Conservatives): Rehman grew up in Gillingham where he attended Richmond Infant School, Napier Primary School, Fort Luton High School, Rainham Mark Grammar School and Chatham Grammar School for Girls. After completing a Law degree at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, he was called to the Bar of England and Wales at Lincolns Inn. Rehman represented both Gillingham and Rainham as a Councillor before standing for Parliament. He cares passionately about the community where he grew up. Rehman has completed 12 half-marathons raising money for local good causes and charities. In April 2017 he will be taking part in the London Marathon to fundraise for Cancer Research. Rehman chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Pakistan and in September 2016 he setup the APPG for Communities Engagement: to help parliamentarians to be aware of, and respond to, the various issues and challenges facing members of the diverse communities in the UK. Rehman is also Chair of the Conservative Foreign and Commonwealth Council Away from work, Rehman enjoys going to the gym, running, watching the Gills, playing cricket and squash, catching a movie and spending time with friends and family.
Khalid Mahmood MP (Labour): Khalid Mahmood was re-elected MP for Birmingham, Perry Bar in May 2010 with a majority of 11,908. He has been Member of Parliament for Birmingham Perry Barr since the 2001 general election. He is also on the Advisory Council (as a Labour Political Council member) of the Henry Jackson Society. He is a graduate of UCE Birmingham and a former engineer with a trade union background. He was a Birmingham City Councillor from 1990-1993.He also served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Home Office Minister Tony McNulty from 10 November 2005 until 6 September 2006.
Muddassar Ahmed (Managing Partner, Unitas Communications): Muddassar leads Unitas Communications, where he’s lead on projects for the United Nations, the Arab League, US State Department and the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC), amongst others. He also founded, and is the currently the President of, the Concordia Forum, an annual retreat for Senior Western Muslim leaders. In addition, he’s President of the John Adams Society, the UK’s official US State Dept. IVLP Association and he’s a Director/Patron of the European Network of American Alumni, Duke University’s Centre for Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies and the Faith’s Forum for London. He’s also a Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts, a Member of the US Atlantic Council and a NATO YA Fellow. Muddassar also recently completed a term as an Independent Advisor to the UK Government on UK Muslim communities and was also recently listed amongst the 500 most influential Muslims globally by Royal Institute of Strategic Studies and Georgetown University.

Saba Shaukat (Managing Director & Founder, Sentient Design Lab): Saba Shaukat is Managing Director and Founder of Sentient Design Lab, a creative digital design and innovation agency helping companies to design new digital products and services. Her specialist areas are in Fintech, working with FTSE 250 companies, challenger banks, launching new digital currencies and sharing economy solutions. In 2017, Saba was named by Innovate Finance on the Women in Fintech Power list. Prior to this, Saba has spent the past two decades in the mobile telecoms and technology industries working at Board level with BT, Vodafone, BBC and Deloitte Consulting in Global Marketing, Brand Extension and joint ventures and partnering across the EMEA and emerging economies Saba has extensive experience in leading global teams to create new commercial ventures and take to market new data and digital products and services. Saba obtained an MBA from London Business School. She is advisor and associate at Ashridge Executive Management and Silicon Valley based Hult International Business School, working with Boards and Government on innovation and disruptive technology. She is a commentator on technology for the BBC. Saba was on the regional Board of one the Prince’s Trust young people on entrepreneurship and business skills. In 2012, she mentored her team to victory in the Princes Trust, nationwide Enterprise Challenge competition. She is also Executive Director and Trustee of the Association of MBAs, a global membership organisation incorporating the top 250 Business Schools and over 30,000 MBAs across the world.
